Head-Shaving & Fashion Show: All for a Good Cause
On Friday, April 27 more than 90 people gathered at
Chicago’s Galleria Marchetti to raise money for and support childhood cancer research. The event was organized by the Columbia College Social and Philanthropy Society, a student run organization dedicated to community service and worthy causes.
The 2nd Annual St. Baldrick’s Benefit & Fashion Show was a product of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which is basically a franchise – people across the world host head-shaving events to help bring in money for the cause. Most St.Baldrick’s events take place in an Irish pub, but since the Columbia student organization was throwing the celebration it had to be in a more appropriate venue.
The event opened with musical entertainment by Columbia’s own Rachel Eve, an up-and-coming artist. Absolute Music Jazz Band also played a few hits. John Imerman served as the events special guest speaker. John survived cancer and created an organization that matches childhood cancer patients with cancer survivors. He shared his own cancer story and what his special organization is able to accomplish. Then it was time for the head-shaving. Approximately 14 volunteers signed up to help raise money by agreeing to publicly shave their head out our event. Among the “shavees” were two women! Professional barbers from Chicago Buzz Barbershop and Salon helped shave heads. After the head-shaving, it was time to really kick the night off! It was time for the fashion show, featuring both professional and student designers. There were many “oohs” and “aahs”. Attending the event was a great way to have some fun, while helping a truly worthy cause: Childhood Cancer Research and Awareness.
