Free Plays!

Who doesn’t enjoy a good play? Columbia College offers a variety of plays that may have you appreciating the arts even more.  The theatre department, offering about fifteen plays a year, opens its doors to Columbia faculty members and students. After I found out my roommate, Bethany, was a set design major in the Theatre Department, I was anxious to watch one of the plays. The last play I was invited to, was “Fool For Love,” by Sam Shepard, and directed by Nicole Lindberg. The play, which was held in the “New Studio,” located at 72 E. 11th Street, can hold approximately 50 people. While small and tickets selling out at a faster pace, you are able to see the actors from any seat. The play was about a half sister and brother who were secretly in love, but was letting their past stop them from being together. Memories of their father haunted them in the play, and in the end, they knew they were meant for each other, despite the confrontations of a new boyfriend, etc.

There are three different places that the performances are held: The Classic Studio, New Studio and the Getz. And don’t worry about finding these plays, because they’re all in the same building. While there are no known plays happening in the summer, Bethany says that the fifteen plays during the course of the year that incorporate an array of different themes. The one thing Bethany said was, “she wishes more people from different departments would come.” Unfortunately, the fliers advertising the plays are mostly in the Theatre building. However, if you check your Oasis email account, it will specify when the plays are running. So, remember, free for Columbia students, and for any inquiries about the plays, ticket prices, or how YOU* could participate, please call:
