What’s a City Without Traffic?

When we think of big cities, we are often reminded of traffic jams. But the worst–or if you’d prefer, the best–jam has to be the Dan Ryan Expressway, since reconstruction began in March 2006. Just ask any of the 320,000 drivers who use the expressway daily.
Work crews have slashed the lanes from 14 to six for most of the 11-mile expressway that provides a thoroughfare from areas south of the city to downtown. Additionally, other highways in Chicago and northwest Indiana feed into the Ryan. The $600 million rehab project is now estimated to cost $1 billion. The project is expected to be completed in 2008.
