Fear Not!

What type of people live in Chicago? My Aunt Eva, born June 15, 1916, has lived in Chicago most of her life, but lives in fear of the city, its residents, and its technology. Yes, I said technology.aunt-eva.jpg

While it is comprehensible that a senior citizen would fear a city’s bad crop of residents who might prey upon the elderly, it is somewhat baffling why a person would fear an electric alarm clock–they might catch fire, or microwave ovens–they give you cancer. Here’s the kicker: Aunt Eva was going to buy a new TV, but my sister convinced her to try cable as it might improve the quality of the picture. Aunt Eva reluctantly agreed. But the very next day, she insisted we discontinue cable service because “all they show all day is the same old station.” Aunt Eva had heard so many great things about cable TV, she did not realize that the viewer has to change the channels. She thought cable TV magically changes itself!

Chicago experienced a heatwave of 110 degrees in 1916, the year Aunt Eva was born. Perhaps this explains another of her fears–the fear of getting cold. In case you haven’t guessed, she keeps her heat on in the summer!
