The Chicago Hot Dog
Chicago has a distinct style with pizza, so why should hot dogs be any different? The Chicago hot dog has a few rules of its own and some key ingredients that set it apart from other hot dogs.
- There is NEVER ketchup on a Chicago hot dog.
- Poppyseed buns are always used, never plain ones.
- You should expect to find mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish, tomato slices, sport peppers and a dill pickle spear, all with a dash of celery salt on a Chicago dog.
Normally, I am not a big fan of “everything” on my food. I have a refined taste (ketchup and mustard on burgers, turkey with cheese and mayo at Subway) but I must say, Chicago hot dogs are pretty damn good. I think it’s the dill pickle spear and the celery salt that makes them so appetizing.
Places to get a real hot dog in Chicago:
- The Clark Street Dog at 3040 N. Clark at Halsted
- Jim’s Hot Dog Stand at 1320 S. Halsted
- The Weiner’s Circle at 2622 N. Clark
- Superdawg at Milwaukee, Devon and Nagle
I personally enjoy the Clark Street Dog. It’s a little small, but it’s open all night and serves some mean hot dogs!
